- Your team is hybrid or spread across locations. The office server stops making sense when half the company is never in the office.
- Your server room is a closet with a fan. Real cloud data centers have redundancy your closet never will.
When a new server genuinely wins
- A line of business application that runs poorly outside a local network, and plenty still do. Manufacturing, medical imaging, and some accounting systems top the list.
- Large files moved constantly, like design and CAD work, where internet speeds become the bottleneck.
- Predictable costs matter more than flexibility. A server is a known number for five years. Cloud bills flex, in both directions.
The honest answer for most businesses
It is usually a mix: cloud for email and files, something local for the stubborn application. The mistake is deciding based on whoever called you last.
